About the Event

Please join the Department of Communication and Black Queer Studies 25th Anniversary  Conference organizing committee in welcoming Dr. Alfred Martin Jr.  (Associate Professor, University of Miami) for a research talk titled  "Strike a Pose: Media industries, TV audiences. And the politics of  queer of color representation."


Dr.  Martin's research is focused on the intersections between media  industry studies, audience studies, and Black queer representation. He  is the author of The Generic Closet: Black Gayness and the Black-Cast Sitcom (Indiana University Press, 2021). Martin has published articles in scholarly journals including International Journal of Cultural Studies, Journal of Cinema and Media Studies, Communication, Culture & Critique, Feminist Media Studies, Popular Communication, and Television and New Media. He is currently writing a book about Blackness and fandom studies exploring the cultural reception of the 1978 film The Wiz
